Japan is actually a land of volcanos so there are a lot of earthquakes there. You do not need to worry about it too much, because most of them are very small ones.
The good news is that, because of the volcanos, there are many ‘onsen’ as well. ‘Onsen’ means hot springs. There are lots of onsen in Japan. They are usually not just hot water but also contain a variety of minerals, so it is good for your health.
Average Japanese person likes to go to onsen, and each onsen is unique in its own way. Some of them provide us with open-air bathing, called ‘rotenburo’. If you are lucky, you can see the moon from a bath at night. It is really beautiful and romantic.
Some people from outside Japan expect they can take mixed bathing, where men and women take a bath together, which is called ‘konyoku’. Unfortunately it is very difficult to find ‘konyoku’ nowadays. But there were some ‘konyoku’ a couple of decades ago. In fact, when I was a child, I experienced mixed bathing. I remember that there were even some young women there too. But at that time I was so young that I did not have that sort of feeling at all.
Anyhow, onsen, especially in winter, is somewhere you really look forward to.
It is fun to find a good onsen. So try it out and find your favorite!
